What Is a Dividend King?

A Dividend King is a publicly traded company that has increased its regular dividend for 50 or more consecutive years. The streak matters because it shows a business that kept growing its cash flow, and its payout, through several full economic cycles.

The bar is high. Most companies never reach 25 years of annual increases, and only a small group passes 50. That's why the list is short and why it changes slowly, with a company joining when it hits its 50th consecutive increase and dropping off if it freezes or cuts its dividend.

A long streak doesn't guarantee future increases. It tells you about the past, so it works best as a starting point for research on whether the business can keep funding its dividend.

Dividend Kings vs. Dividend Aristocrats vs. Dividend Champions

The three lists overlap, but they use different rules.

  • Dividend Kings: 50 years of increases
  • Dividend Aristocrats: 25 years of increases, must be in the S&P 500, plus size and liquidity minimums
  • Dividend Champions: 25 years of increases, U.S. listed with no index requirement

Every Dividend King has passed the 25-year mark more than twice over. But not every King is an Aristocrat, because Aristocrats must also belong to the S&P 500. Some Kings are smaller companies that fall outside the index.

How to Read the Table

  • Streak: the number of consecutive years of dividend increases. Longer is a stronger track record, but it says nothing on its own about the next increase.
  • Dividend yield: the annual dividend divided by the share price. A high yield can mean the price has fallen, so check why before treating it as a bargain. Read more about Dividend Yield Theory.
  • Payout ratio: the share of earnings paid out as dividends. A lower ratio generally leaves more room to keep raising the dividend, though what's normal differs by sector. Utilities and staples usually run higher than industrials.
  • 5-year dividend growth: how quickly the dividend has grown recently. A king raising its dividend by a few cents a year is different from one growing it at a high single-digit rate.
  • Quality Score: Yieldr's estimated read on the health of the business and the dividend.

No single column tells the whole story. A king with a modest yield, a low payout ratio, and steady growth has a different profile from one with a high yield and a payout ratio near its limit.

How to Use This List

A list of 59 companies is a research starting point, not a shopping list. Here is a simple way to work through it:

  1. Filter for what you need. Sort by yield if you want more income today, or by dividend growth if you care more about future increases.
  2. Check the safety signals. Look at the payout ratio, the Quality Score, and the risks section on each king's page.
  3. Consider valuation. A great business can still be a poor choice at a high price. Find out more about Dividend Yield Theory or how to analyze a dividend stock.
  4. Think about the whole portfolio. Check how a King fits with what you already own, including sector overlap.
  5. Track what you own. Once you've picked holdings, a dividend tracker shows your forecasted income by pay date.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Dividend Kings are there?

There are currently 59 Dividend Kings on our list as of October 30, 2026. Other sites report different totals because they treat spin-offs, foreign listings, and recent additions differently.

What is the longest-running Dividend King?

American States Water Company (AWR) has the longest active streak, with 71 consecutive years of dividend increases.

Which Dividend King has the highest yield?

Universal Corporation (UVV) has the highest current yield at 8.01%. A high yield can reflect a lower share price or a stretched payout ratio, so review the company's safety details before drawing conclusions.

Are all Dividend Kings also Dividend Aristocrats?

No. Aristocrats must be in the S&P 500 and meet size and liquidity requirements. Some Dividend Kings don't qualify.

What happens if a Dividend King cuts or freezes its dividend?

It's removed from the list, because the consecutive-increase streak is broken.

Are Dividend Kings a safe investment?

A long dividend record is a good sign, but no stock or list is risk-free. Prices fall, businesses change, and past increases don't guarantee future ones. Review each company's finances and think about how it fits your own situation.

How often is this list updated?

The data is updated every trading day, and we review the list itself for additions and removals throughout the year.
